Some of her achievements were: she created a literary salon that introduced the Romantic Movement to the world, she organized the first international feminist congress. She was a poet, a social reformer, an amateur scientist, and a freelance writer. She was also the mother of the author of this book, a daughter, an insightful and warm-hearted friend. Mary Shelley was born in 1797 to a prominent English family, yet her love for her father, William Godwin, made her question the social and moral norms of that time. Shelley was raised as a Unitarian, became a Universalist, then a Quaker, and finally joined the Anglican Church as her mother’s illness took its toll. Mary began to develop a social conscience at a young age, and began to write about women’s rights, the status of children, and the iniquities of the legal system. She became a socialist, a feminist, and a nature-worshiper at a time when such beliefs were considered the works of madmen. Between 1816 and 1817, when her husband and her lover, Percy Bysshe Shelley, decided to undertake a trip on the Arctic Ocean in search of the North Pole, Mary Shelley was left behind in England with her 2-year-old daughter, Clara, because her mother-in-law, who had decided to travel with them, was ill. After the death of her mother-in-law, Mary, Clara, and her husband sailed for the United States.
